Working hours:   Full time

Time-frame: One-year contract, with possibility of extension

Salary: £23,000 – £27,000 commensurate with experience.

Dot Dot Dot, a young and fast-growing social enterprise which allows people who do great volunteering to live in buildings that would otherwise be empty, is looking for a new Business Development Co-ordinator to join our growing team. This is an opportunity to join a fast-growing social enterprise in a pivotal role, working as part of a great team to scale up a proven and award-winning model by helping us to attract new clients.

Dot Dot Dot allows people who do brilliant voluntary work to live cheaply as property guardians in buildings that would otherwise be empty.

We are growing swiftly.  Today, we are a team of eight, housing hundreds of guardians who between them give thousands of hours a month to charitable purposes. In five years, we aim to be housing a thousand guardians, who will be giving tens of thousands of hours to good causes, making a positive difference to others’ lives, and becoming motivated to give time to charitable causes and to contribute to the community for the rest of their lives.  At the same time, we will continue to celebrate volunteering, advocate for better housing for all, reshape attitudes to empty buildings and drive up standards in the security industry.

About the role

Dot Dot Dot is growing, and to grow we need to find more potential clients, win more work and develop new services that meet our clients’ needs. At the same time, we need to attract and recruit brilliant property guardians to take care of buildings and who want do great volunteering.

In this role you will be line-managed by the Head of Business Development, and you will collaborate with colleagues who are responsible for delivering the work that you are helping to win as necessary.

This role will assist Dot Dot Dot’s growth in four main ways:

  • assisting with business development activity related to researching new clients, new products and by contributing to written pitches and bids (approx. 40% of your time will be spent on this)
  • oversee the business processes that allow Dot Dot Dot to attract and select the best property guardians, so that there are sufficient suitable prospective guardians (30%)
  • maintain and occasionally improve our database so that information and data is managed well and accurately, and operational processes can be undertaken efficiently across Dot Dot Dot (20%)
  • contribute to the organisation as a whole, as a member of a strong, motivated team – chipping in with ideas for ways we could do our work better or more efficiently, and rolling up your sleeves to help others with their tasks during especially busy periods (10%)

Assisting with business development activity

Researching new clients, identifying potential organisations who may need Dot Dot Dot’s services and products and understanding the key decision makers within those organisations

Researching new sectors and industry segments, in order to understand the needs of those sectors and how Dot Dot Dot can position its services and products in ways that are relevant and compelling

Preparing and keeping up-to-date lists of contacts for marketing exercises

Preparing text, data and information that contributes to high quality, accurate and comprehensive proposals for specific clients, projects and buildings

Manage occasional projects that are in place to develop and strengthen Dot Dot Dot’s business, this role will by support project management by ensuring that timetables and deliverables are updated and tracked and that relevant project risks are identified and managed

Supporting the Head of Business Development in other ways that are useful and in ways that drive Dot Dot Dot forwards – examples would include research activity, competitor analysis, evaluation and analysis, making a contribution to work that helps develop new products and services

Recruitment and selection of prospective guardians

Working with other members of the Dot Dot Dot team, holding responsibility for the application and selection processes, so that there is a sufficient pipeline of suitable applicants

Tracking numbers of potential guardians at each stage of the application and screening process, and adjusting marketing efforts and internal workflows where needed to ensure sufficient numbers to match the demands of the buildings we protect

Exploring new methods of marketing Dot Dot Dot’s offer to prospective property guardians and monitoring the effectiveness of those methods and their cost-effectiveness

Ensuring that our processes encourage the best potential guardians, whilst also screening out those who are not suitable, and at all times in ways that are consistent with Dot Dot Dot’s brand, values and ethics

Selecting and planning campaigns that promote what Dot Dot Dot offers to a more diverse range of potential guardians, recognising the diversity of the areas in which we operate

Maintain and improve the Dot Dot Dot database

Have overall responsibility for the integrity of data and efficient operation of our database

Be a source of expertise in the use of the database, supporting Dot Dot Dot team members to become confident in using the database efficiently and effectively

From time to time, identify and deliver small-scale improvements in the functionality of the database, for example updating picklists and client information, reviewing and cleaning data, identifying and correcting gaps in information, cloning processes to match new services that Dot Dot Dot offers

Contribute to the organisation as a whole

Contribute to the thinking and decision-making involved in scaling up a proven model as a member of a strong, motivated and collaborative team

Support colleagues with their tasks during busy periods – and draw on colleagues’ skills and capacity to get your own work done.

About you

You will have these skills already:

  • Research ability
  • Good writing skills and able to produce accurate and correct business writing
  • Analysis of data and information
  • Investigating processes/ways of doing things and identifying how they can be improved
  • Ability to use systems and tools to support an organisation’s development and operations
  • Project management or support
  • Organising your own work, with your manager’s support and guidance

You might already have, or will definitely be able to develop these skills:

  • Willingness to try new ways of doing things, and evaluating their success
  • Database administration
  • Supporting and training colleagues
  • Online marketing approaches (such as paid-for adverts)
  • An understanding of the key sectors that Dot Dot Dot works within (social housing, local government, commercial property)
